Private Residence
under construction
Kelowna, BC
Perched on an exposed corner site and bounded by roads on three sides, this two-storey residence with walkout basement negotiates visibility and privacy through a carefully calibrated architecture. The design acknowledges its prominent setting while selectively framing views, managing sightlines, and creating moments of retreat within an otherwise open context.
The main living level opens to a south-facing deck, sheltered by expansive overhangs that temper summer sun while allowing daylight to penetrate deep into the interior. In contrast, a more intimate north-facing side-yard patio offers a protected outdoor space—cool and secluded—providing refuge on hot days or when privacy is desired. These dual outdoor rooms allow the house to adapt to changing conditions and moods throughout the day.
Above, the primary bedroom is positioned on the uppermost level, where a corner window unexpectedly captures long views across the lake. This elevated moment rewards the vertical journey through the house, offering a quiet sense of discovery and connection to the broader landscape.
The building’s massing is intentionally broken down through feathered, low rooflines that follow the natural topography of the site. This approach reduces the perceived scale of the home and allows it to sit comfortably within its surroundings despite its prominent exposure. A restrained material palette—light-coloured siding paired with warm wood accents, expressed steel structure, and ribbed metal roofing—balances durability with warmth and texture.
Final landscaping will further ground the home at the corner, softening its edges and reinforcing the relationship between architecture and site, allowing the residence to settle naturally into its neighbourhood while maintaining a distinct and considered presence.
